Project summary

The LIFE VienNATURA project addresses the challenges of nature and species conservation across a 57-hectare site comprising semi-arid and arid grasslands as well as woodland areas, which provide habitats for numerous threatened animal and plant species, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects and wild bees. Current issues such as inadequate management, uncontrolled succession, invasive alien species (IAS) and recreational use threaten these habitats and endanger local biodiversity.

The project takes a holistic approach: it is developing a coordinated restoration plan that encompasses habitat improvements, the removal of invasive species, the establishment of extensive grazing landscapes and the promotion of characteristic tree species. Measures to promote species conservation, habitat management, monitoring and adaptive management ensure the implementation of the nature conservation objectives. In addition, public relations work, environmental education and participatory formats are used to increase public acceptance of the measures and to foster long-term identification with the project.

Results and impact

• Restoration of resilient, sustainable and biodiverse habitats: LIFE VienNATURA builds on decades of experience in habitat management, mowing and the control of non-native plants in Vienna. Open spaces and forests are managed sustainably, succession is controlled and invasive species are reduced. This creates resilient, near-natural habitats that offer protection to endangered plant and animal species.
• A dynamic landscape, interconnected habitats and viable populations: Through extensive grazing, the interconnection of open land areas and targeted forest management, habitat gaps are closed and stable populations of local species are promoted. The project utilises tried-and-tested methods from previous nature conservation projects and ensures that flora and fauna benefit in the long term.
• Nature-friendly and sustainable development: The implementation of a coordinated restoration plan, the construction of necessary infrastructure, the remediation of contaminated sites and targeted maintenance will enable the project’s objectives to be achieved in the long term. These measures safeguard habitats, support populations of protected species and enable adaptive, evidence-based management of the area.
• Raising awareness, acceptance and appreciation of nature conservation: The public is involved in the process through information campaigns, environmental education and participatory initiatives. Acceptance of conservation measures such as grazing or access restrictions is strengthened, whilst awareness of and appreciation for nature and species conservation in Vienna and beyond is increased.
