For years, Vienna has been considered one of the most liveable cities in the world. The city's public services, which are summarized under the term services of general interest, make a significant contribution to this. These are services that are particularly important for everyday life and contribute to the high quality of life in Vienna: they include water supply, wastewater and waste disposal, health and social services and local public transport. A high level of security of supply and sustainable development instead of the pursuit of profit are therefore not only in the interests of the city, but also of the Viennese people.

Within the city administration, Municipal Department 48 (MA 48) - Waste Management, Street Cleaning and Vehicle Fleet is responsible for Vienna's excellent waste disposal system with its high environmental and quality standards. In addition to waste disposal, well-functioning waste management also includes, for example, environmental education, the formulation of strategies for waste avoidance and circular economy, consistent waste separation and other services. All these measures serve to maintain the excellent quality of life in Vienna.

In addition to its focus on waste management, MA 48 is also responsible for street cleaning and, with the exception of the blue light organizations, for the entire vehicle fleet of the City of Vienna. In addition to technical fleet management, this also includes the purchase and maintenance of vehicles and the sale of used vehicles and equipment.
