Project summary

The INTERREG VA SK-AT (2014-2020) project "CITY NATURE - Development of methods and communication tools for the conservation and stabilization of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Vienna and Bratislava" focused on promoting the cross-border integration of functional ecological networks in order to preserve biodiversity and contribute to the stabilization of ecosystems. The project promoted the development of green infrastructure in the border region of the two neighbouring cities in the so-called "Twin-City" region of Bratislava and Vienna.

The project addressed the problem of the declining quality and quantity of green infrastructure in large cities and the lack of environmental awareness among residents. Major problems also include the inappropriate management of meadows and the destruction of breeding grounds for endangered species directly in urban and peri-urban habitats. The aim of the project was to preserve and stabilize green infrastructures by implementing measures to increase biodiversity in urban areas and through comprehensive public relations work.

Results and impact

The project aimed to increase biodiversity in urban areas in the long term. This goal was achieved through research, mapping and monitoring of fauna and flora, development of methods and implementation of sustainable management.

In addition, the project included high-quality environmental education and promotion of biodiversity (information center, excursions, the first cross-border biodiversity day, information and promotional materials, environmental and forest education promoted the "experienceability" of biodiversity right on the doorstep (online service system).

The findings from the project come together in the newly built "Kamzik" information centre, where the population in the "Twin City" region can have their own special experience of nature. This guarantees a sustainable impact for many years to come.

The project has helped to maintain and stabilize the green infrastructure by implementing measures to increase biodiversity in urban areas and through comprehensive public relations work.
