On 15 November 2024 DG REGIO hosted in Brussels the "Youth for Future Cooperation – on the road to Interreg GO!" event, bringing together 100 young people involved in Interreg and territorial cooperation, including Interreg Volunteer Youth (IVY) volunteers, Border Focal Point Network Cross-Border Ambassadors , and members of Youth Councils from Macro-Regional Strategies.
The event aimed at empowering young people to play a central role in shaping the future of regional policy. Through thematic breakout sessions and panel discussions the participants shared their ideas and views to concretely contribute to the consultation process for the future of Territorial Cooperation
During the discussions, some recurring elements emerged:
- Integrate & Empower Border Regions: European integration must strive to create a more connected and inclusive approach to border regions policies in areas like transport, education, and labour markets.
- Break Down Barriers: simplify border-related regulations and procedures will help foster cooperation and make it easier for people and businesses to work together across borders.
- Involve Everyone: it is fundamental for Interreg to engage diverse stakeholders, including young people and underrepresented communities.
- Mainstream Youth: Interreg should prioritize youth engagement and inclusion in all policy objectives, education, and communication efforts to make a meaningful difference in their lives and communities.
These elements will prove fundamental to ensure the policy to be closer to the needs and ambitions of younger generations in the coming years.
The event also featured interventions by DG REGIO’s Directorate General Themis Christophidou, who emphasised the potential for younger generations to foster positive change, and Director Slawomir Tokarski.
At the end of the event, participants signed a Youth Declaration enclosing the contributions and recommendations emerged during the discussions. This document will be officially presented in Gorizia-Nova Gorica during the Interreg GO! event on 28 March 2025.
