Project summary
For years, Vienna has been considered one of the most liveable cities in the world. The city's public services, which are summarized under the term services of general interest, make a significant contribution to this. These are services that are particularly important for everyday life and contribute to the high quality of life in Vienna: they include water supply, wastewater and waste disposal, health and social services and local public transport. A high level of security of supply and sustainable development instead of the pursuit of profit are therefore not only in the interests of the city, but also of the Viennese people.
Within the city administration, Municipal Department 48 (MA 48) - Waste Management, Street Cleaning and Vehicle Fleet is responsible for Vienna's excellent waste disposal system with its high environmental and quality standards. In addition to waste disposal, well-functioning waste management also includes, for example, environmental education, the formulation of strategies for waste avoidance and circular economy, consistent waste separation and other services. All these measures serve to maintain the excellent quality of life in Vienna.
In addition to its focus on waste management, MA 48 is also responsible for street cleaning and, with the exception of the blue light organizations, for the entire vehicle fleet of the City of Vienna. In addition to technical fleet management, this also includes the purchase and maintenance of vehicles and the sale of used vehicles and equipment.

Results and impact
In order to further decarbonize the City of Vienna’s vehicle fleet and meet the requirements of the Vienna Climate Roadmap and the Clean Vehicle Directive, MA 48 plans to convert the diesel and petrol-powered vehicle fleet of all vehicle classes to zero-emission vehicles. 34 battery-powered vehicles of class N1, 44 battery-powered vehicles of classes N2 and N3 and 2 H2-powered vehicles of classes N2 and N3 are to be purchased by 31.12.2025 and integrated into the existing fleet, thus making a significant contribution to emission-free operation.
The vehicles will be distributed across 16 parking locations. All locations are equipped with appropriate charging infrastructure to guarantee the electric supply of the fleet. The MA 48 obtains 100% of its electricity and hydrogen from renewable energy sources.
By the end of the project period, around 14% of the MA 48 fleet (all vehicle classes) are operated emission-free by the time the subsidized commercial vehicles are put into operation and will make a direct contribution to climate protection by reducing CO2 emissions by around 2,400 tons within the 5-year retention period.
