TEN-T Planning: Studies on the expansion of the trimodal port of Freudenau-Vienna & TEN-T Land Acquisition: expansion of the trimodal inland port through land reclamation

Funding programme

client

Port of Vienna

duration

January 2012 - December 2015

The "Hafen Freudenau land reclamation " project created more space for new handling and storage facilities in order to optimally equip the Port of Vienna for future increases in cargo volumes. The port basin was reduced in size by around 20 percent. New facilities for goods handling can be built on the new areas gained in this way.

Project summary

The Port of Freudenau is a hub for international flows of goods and transhipment between inland waterway, rail and road. It is the only trimodal logistics location in the greater Vienna area and therefore plays a key role in intermodal freight transportation.

The heart of the Port of Vienna is the new container terminal, which was opened in 2008. With the addition of a third crane bridge in 2013, its maximum capacity is around 600,000 container units. The Port of Vienna is experiencing a strong upward trend in the container business. For this reason, the terminal was to be expanded once again to include a terminal area directly adjacent to the existing terminal and located directly on the waterfront. This shortens the distances at the terminal, the containers can be handled more quickly and new space is created to store even more containers. The new terminal project also increased the maximum container handling capacity. Depending on the economic situation, up to 30 percent more containers can be handled after completion.

Restults and impact

The EU co-financed two initiatives to expand the Port of Vienna's container handling capacity and improve the port's overall intermodality with over EUR 5.3 million from the TEN-T program. The projects contributed to the elimination of major bottlenecks in the port's handling and combination capacities.

The study on the expansion of the trimodal port of Freudenau/Vienna in the area of the Trans-European Transport Network TEN-T was carried out as the first part of the project, the expansion of the trimodal inland port through land reclamation as the second part.
